​Was inspired by a crisis of conscience. Its motivations were social and moral. For a brief period at the end of the 19C British design theory enjoyed 

it represented the triumph of the individual craftsman. Fundamental to the movements thinking was a belief that mechanical progress meant the ​destruction 
​of purpose, sense and Life. leading supporters and exponents were John Ruskin &
William Morris.​
